I enjoy drawing from the Explore.org live cams when I’m stuck at home. Or trashy reality tv shows! I learn so much about interactions, like how much we humans tilt our heads when we listen and speak to each other.
Old Enough is so good isn’t it? I love how it’s low stakes and high stakes at the same time. There was an episode where I felt overjoyed because someone managed to get a yogurt off a shelf!
I am currently re-engaging with drawing but have struggled with where to find dynamic examples. This is a great idea. Might even get me to sign up for Instagram :-)
I don't want to push you into a relationship with instagram! 😆 Dynamic moving subjects are such an exciting way to re-engage though, can't wait to see how you're drawings go!
This is such a clever idea! I’ve never tried drawing from reels. I actually find drawing from life / moving things very difficult. Recently I’ve spent a few minutes in the evenings drawing my cat, rabbit, ducks or horses but I find it so difficult because I’m used to drawing from photos! Perhaps watching videos on repeat could help me develop my drawing from reality... almost like a bridge between photo and the real world.
Drawing moving things can be so tricky! I find it takes time to get my brain and hand to work together properly each time I try to draw moving people from life. Reels definitely helps, especially as you can watch the same one over and over!
Intriguing ideas, working from Instagram reels! I had been relying more on YouTube when I needed video ref, but I hadn't realized that Instagram reels were searchable.
I've used YouTube a few times for reference as well but always found it a bit cumbersome. Reels is like a speeded up version as you don't have to wait to skip ads and it's so useful that it automatically repeats.
ps. I was quite starstruck when I saw Debbie Ridpath Ohi had commented on my substack! ✨
Everyone can draw! Honestly, it's true - we all draw as kids without even thinking about it. Then we grow up and judgement comes in and we get self conscious. Everyone can get back to that drawing enthusiasm, it just takes a bit of practice.
What a brilliant idea - thanks for sharing!

Reality tv shows is such a good idea! I’ll have give that a go!
I really like 90-Day Fiancé. It’s less trashy and a bit more documentary style. I get invested!
Oh I don’t know that one, I’m going to look it up and check it out. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
It’s one of the top shows here in the US. They released a UK version last year and it is absolutely brilliant!
What a great idea to draw from reels - and I am also a massive fan of Old Enough!
