I think I still have a copy of the Raymond Briggs Father Christmas book. Definitely a classic! I'm looking forward to seeing the Mogg animation that's on at Christmas! x
That's so cool you still have it! I wish I still had my original copy, but very happy it's still in print so I could get another. I haven't seen the Mog animation, I'll have to look out for it. I really love the animated versions of both Raymond Briggs Snowman and Father Christmas!
Ooh lots of new ones to look up there, thank you for the recommendations! I still get Mog's Christmas & the Raymond Briggs books out every Christmas, despite the fact that my kids are teenagers now ... and The Dark is Rising has been my favourite winter book to read since I was 11. I really enjoyed the audio version - just want to see a proper Susan-Cooper-Approved film of it now!
A few years ago there was a Dark is Rising read along on Twitter, there was a timeline so you start on Midwinter Eve when the book starts and follow along in real time. That might be such a great illustration challenge for 2024! **Puts on thinking and planning hat**
Thank you for the shout-out Nanette, and for cheering on Gerry’s lovely book. He says thank you. My favourite Christmas book, I have lots of favourites, but today I am choosing Harvey Slumfenburger by John Burningham. I bought it for our postman because he walks through snowy fields on foot to deliver Christmas mail.
That's so nice of you to give your postman a book! (I live above my postman's mum!) Adding Harvey Slumfenburger to my wishlist right now! I really love both your's and Gerry's snowy books (I keep hoping Gerry might turn up giving a Good Ship talk, no pressure!)
Oh! I've just Googled 'Non' what a beautifully designed book! It's so exciting to look at children's books in different countries isn't it? There's such different work in different places, exploring bookshops is an essential holiday activity!
I LOVED this list!! The only one I’d add is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats 🤍🤍🤍 I love mog and didn’t know there was a xmas story!! In my search for a copy to add to our Christmas collection I saw that channel 4 is releasing a movie version on Christmas Eve this year - wonder if I can find a way to watch in the states? The skull! The shortest day!! So many favorites on here and your note about the crunching snow in the dark is rising podcast - just perfect ✨✨
Yes! The Snowy Day is a classic too, the pattern elements are so beautiful! I don't own a copy of it, I need to put it right at the top of my wishlist! Hope you find a way to watch Mog! 🎄
Oh, I ADORED Raymond Brigg's Father Christmas when I was a kid. "Another bloomin' Christmas!" And Mogg, of course. It's not in the snow theme, but did you ever read "Father Christmas goes on Holiday"? Another Briggs gem.
Yes! I loved Father Christmas goes on Holiday! So much classic old school Brit abroad about it too, I think he gets sunburn and reacts to eating different food! There's a great animated version of the Father Christmas books, if I remember right it's both books combined and narrated by Mel Smith.
For a Winter and Christmas obsessive like me, this is a delight! Thank you! My favourite books this time of year include Carson Ellis and Susan Cooper’s ‘The Shortest Day’ lovely to read that you too get little excited flutters when you look at great picture books! The Shortest Day always does that for me. Also, in the front of ‘Moominland Midwinter’ is a delicious fold out winter scene, that gets me too, but somehow not as much as the B&W images within, which have contrast and white space as a means of conveying heat, cold and light down to perfection...
Nanette - what an exciting thread! I LOVE snow and as a child snowy illustrations in books simply captivated me. I love the ones you posted and here is a page from The Tomten and the Fox by Astrid Lindgren illustrated by Harald Wiberg. The magical combo of Astrid's spell-binding tale and the voluptuous and preternatural paintings put me in wonderland - I hope I am not infringing copyright by showing this image but hopefully people may go and buy her book! Hmmm - cannot seem to upload an image...
Extra Yarn is so good isn't it?! I love it's gentleness and the fact the "Bad Guy" turns up quite late and is dispatched quickly, and it's so beautiful to look at!

I was obsessed with The Dark is Rising at 11 too! Such an immersive read! I haven't seen any film versions of it, but it could be amazing on screen!
I found it very compelling too Nanette. I must find a copy to re-read...
Oh my WORD! The Dark in Rising! What a blast from the past Martha! I read it aged 14 in comp...thanks for the memory prompt...
I reread it quite often, it's still as good as I remember it being!
Do you? It must really chime with something in you then Martha. I am getting a copy.

Ooh that sounds cozy and right up my street Nanette. I have ordered a second hand copy yesterday:) I hope you carry out your cunning plan:)
Look forward to hearing what you think of the book!

Brilliant list ! Live all those amazing illustrations 🤩
We bought a beautiful book in France years ago called ‘Non’ by Claudia Rueda about a bear who doesn’t want to hibernate ! It’s lovely 🥰

Yes! The one I got Non from was such a lovely shop :) and nice to read in French too

Love Love your book recommendations!! :)
Thank you so much Alina! It was a lot of fun to pull them all off my shelves and have a good look through!
Some absolute corkers there Nanette! ❤️
Thank you so much Jane! My wishlist keeps growing too! 📚📚📚📚📚😆
What a dreamy list of books! ❄️😍
Thanks Beth, I've been loving other people's lists of books, I always spot something new to add to the wishlist!

I have my childhood copies of both FC books in the studio ... I'll venture out tomorrow once the rain's stopped and dig them out.
My GOODNESS: A treasure trove of books.

Great recommendations! Definitely Extra Yarn is one of my favorites

Absolutely!
