That's such an interesting story! Also to find out that pencils were made like that! I often wonder what happened to things I used to have. They've got to be somewhere!
It’s so cool seeing how pencils used to be made! The sliding part of this one reminded me of those wooden pencil boxes with the sliding lid. It must have taken a lot of skill to make a pencil like this!
Wonderful, Nanette! I wonder if our streets are being held up by rubble-filled shipwrecks. There have been enough sinkholes lately to make that a possibility.
Ahh great Nanette! Love all this pencil flaneuring, weirdly I just posted Derwent’s incredible ancient pencil machine in my stories and was literally just pondering how pencils were made- you’ve filled a gap! Thanks 😅✏️
Oh my heart! This was such a charming read! You're inspiring me - I recently went deep on Victorian era toothbrushes and I might need to share my findings.

It's so cool isn't it?! Makes me wonder what weird things of ours will turn up in the future!

Haha! They may well be - especially right on the coast where you are - see what Pickle can dig up! 😆
My goodness these stories are riveting!!!!!
They are so much fun to investigate! So glad you like reading them too! x
Your pencils histories are amazing and a delight to read, each one is more surprising than the last one ❤️ bravo Nanette!
They are a real delight to research! Thank you so much for the encouragement Teresa! 🥰
Unbelievable! It kinda reminds me of a vintage mechanical pencil. Much cooler than the ones I've used. This would make such a brilliant book, Nanette!
These pencil stories just get better and better! How fascinating that there was a whole ship underneath Manhattan!
Isn’t it incredible! I was looking into a totally different story when I stumbled on this, I love that half the boat is still there!

“flaneuring”!! 🤣 I love the pencil machine you shared, so cool seeing things being made in bulk like that!
I’m just loving reading these posts too Nanette! Love a bit of history!
Ahh, thank you so much Heather! It’s a lot of fun digging in to it!
What an incredible story! ✏️ I wonder what else was on that ship? Maybe some 17th century sellotape 🤔
17th century sellotape!!! 🤣 Amazing! Though now I won’t be able to rest until I learn all about the origins of sellotape! 🤣
I love these pencil posts Nanette!! Will they be turning into a book? Who knew the history of the pencil was so interesting?!
Thanks Ella! There’s a lot of interesting pencil stories, the more I dig the more I find! ✏️✏️✏️
