What do you make when you’re feeling wobbly? (Either creatively wobbly or just generally wobbly).
I like to make drawings of stuff on my desk. Things that are so familiar it’s like drawing a self-portrait. But with less ‘what is going on with my hair?’
The best creative comfort blankets help you zone out. Your hands know what to do and your brain is busy enough to keep the world out. But not so busy that it gets stressful.
Doesn’t it get a bit boring always going back to the same thing?
Nope!
There’s lots of stuff on my desk!
There’s different compositions and colours and materials to explore. All within a nice, safe familiar setting.
That familiarity is part of the comfort, like watching a favourite film again and again.
A couple of years ago, my creative comfort blanket was knitting hats. I think everyone is happy that phase passed.
Sometimes, I wish I was someone who comfort baked, mmmm…
But comfort drawing is just fine with me.
Here’s another one:
What’s your creative comfort blanket?
Is there something you draw / photograph / bake / knit / make when you just need a bit of comfort?
I would love to hear about it!
Comfort swim. I head to the river and swim till I’m no longer cold, then dive under, the sound and colours change and everything feels better. Sometimes I’m accompanied by kingfishers, ducks and turquoise damsel flies. Other times it’s just pond skaters and midges that I pretend are fairies 🧚🏿♀️. The missoni stripes of the trees reflected in the river never ceases to produce wonder and calm.
I draw whatever green life is around me—trees, small plants, grasses. 🍃
